Creating the Batcave

So, it looks like I haven't posted about this before, which is surprising! So I guess I'll start ...

Ever since we bought our first house together (that last house), I've wanted a place where I can display and enjoy all the items I've acquired for my hobby. That hobby is superheros / superhero movie costumes / props. I seem to have collected a good amount of stuff for this hobby, and always wanted a place to display it where it would actually look cool and not only nerdy. Sure, it'll always look nerdy ... but at least it will look cool for nerds! Get it!?

Anyway. I tried to use the craft room in the old house as a display room, but it never looked right. That's most likely because of the color yellow!! We both figured that we would be moving soon, and we didn't want to mess up the room by creating a cave in it! Caves aren't great for resale, especially if the carpet is old :)! The room did work in the capacity that I needed it in, which was to display some items and have a place to do sculpting, sanding or painting.

Nope.

Whenever we went house-hunting for fun (or for reals), I would always try to find a place to have my Batcave. Only new-construction homes seemed really suited for that since they all had unfinished basements. But that means of course that I would have to build it from the ground up, and we'd have to live in the boonies (where they build new houses) ... no thanks! Either that or a huge multi-million-dollar house, which wasn't going to happen.

Luckily in the house we have now, the house is big enough that we didn't need that extra bedroom in the basement. Not to mention that I wouldn't want to stay in a room that looked like this, so I don't know why one of my guests would. Blegh ...

Drop ceilings are classy.

Also luckily for me, my wife is awesome. She gave me the go-ahead to tear the room apart and build the Batcave! She said as long as we had enough space for guests, office space, and (future) kids, we don't need this room! So I came up with a layout plan using Google Sketch-Up, then I made the Batcave a reality.

If you'd like the short version of the renovation, watch this video. For the long version, see The Batcave Build - Part I .
